Tuning the Signal
A handheld transistor radio sat propped on a small wooden riser near the soldering bench, its telescopic antenna collapsed and silent. Leaving an instrument dormant when the afternoon signal is clearest felt unproductive. I navigated across the ribbed mat, stepping onto the wooden base of an adjustable magnifier lamp to reach the casing. Planting both boots firmly against the tuner dial, I leaned my shoulder into the knurled plastic ring and shifted it a quarter-inch until the harsh static gave way to a clean, steady percussion beat. Balanced and clear, right on frequency.
