I examined the vertical spine of an architectural journal resting upright on the lowest shelf. Its cover gaped open slightly, revealing a sequence of glossy fold-out plates. Stepping carefully between the leaning book edges, I pressed my hands against the heavy paper flap to unfold it flat across the shelf. Before me lay a detailed floor plan rendered in crisp monochrome lines. I aligned my heels along the printed outer boundary, slowly tracing each corridor and numbered chamber step by step. The scale was consistent throughout, giving me a satisfying, orderly pathway to navigate before the house woke up.
