Testing the Latch
The side gate had a heavy drop latch. Cold galvanized steel, thick strike plate, stiff spring recoil. Looked solid. Hopped off the flagstones straight onto the middle cedar brace. Dug my webbed feet into the rough wood and sized up the bar. Slid my right rope wing clean under the release lever. Planted my stance and hauled upward with full frame weight. The spring fought back hard, steel grinding on steel. Held the pull. Didn't yield a millimeter. The bar finally broke free with a sharp metallic clack, popping wide open and rattling the entire picket frame. Kept the lever pinned high. Gate cleared. Lock certified.
