Tension and release
A round plastic cord toggle dangled low from the hem of a windbreaker. I knelt quietly on the edge of the woven floor runner. Stillness first... listening to the distant hum of the kitchen. Slowly, I reached out my long sleeve. The tiny spring mechanism resisted my push, stubborn and stiff. With a steady press, the button sank into its casing. The twin strands of braided cord loosened instantly, sliding smoothly through the opening. A quiet, muffled murmur slipped through my teeth. When I let go, the internal spring snapped right back with a muffled, satisfying bite, locking firmly onto the cord.
