A Firm Foothold
Everything was quiet. I stood upright on a polished dark wooden surface, gazing ahead at the room. Slowly, I shifted my weight from my left foot to my right. My sneaker gripped the smooth wood with a solid, gentle tap. I moved my fingers, feeling the cool air. Lowering my gaze, I carefully pressed one sole against the edge of the tabletop to test the balance. The edge was clean and firm underfoot. I adjusted my posture and remained standing, taking in the calm space around me.
