Spinning the Button
I found the brass coat button resting against the vestibule baseboard. Its heavy metal dome was cool against my palms. Standing it upright on its thin curved edge, I steadied the wobble with both hands. With a quick, firm twist of my fingers, I snapped it into motion. The button caught the smooth marble floor, spinning into a dizzy brass blur. It hummed with a quiet vibration, throwing bright glints of noon light across the polished stone. When the spin slowed, its rim chattered louder and louder against the floor, settling with a crisp metallic slap. I picked it up to try again.
