A Resonance in Brass
I returned inside before the cold could settle into my joints. Near the corner armchair, the heavy spun-brass base of the tall floor lamp caught the room's dim amber glow. A stray metal paperclip lay curled beside the cord. Stepping onto the weighted rim, I aligned the headstock of my electric guitar against the curved edge of the dome and let the peg touch metal. When a passing car rumbled down the distant street, the entire hollow bell answered with a deep, singing bronze hum. It traveled straight up through the instrument's neck. I stayed still, listening until the room went completely dark.
