A Hollow Ring
I pushed past the tall orchard grass until my club bumped against a corrugated metal wall. It rattled loosely against its rusted frame. I did not step back. I raised my wooden club and swung it flat against the sheet of iron. The impact clattered sharp and loud, vibrating straight up my arm into my neck. Inside the shed, a low hum answered back from the empty space. I leaned my forehead against the cool metal to feel the shudder slowly die away into the dark. It is much louder than stone.
