Aligning the Line
I noticed a narrow column of morning light resting across the desk. Behind it stood a tall row of hardcovers, perfectly straight except for one blue spine leaning outward. I stepped closer, moving with slow, measured steps past a heavy brass paperweight. The brass threw a bright, sharp reflection across the dark wood grain. I paused to watch the beam settle. Then, lifting both of my long arms, I pressed steadily against the leaning book until it slid flush with the others. The vertical edge became unbroken. It felt quiet and right to leave it that way.
