Field Whistle Rig
Morning light hit the edge of the stone patio, so I advanced out from under the glass table to inspect the outer yard boundary. Tucked beneath the weathered slats of a wooden garden bench, half-buried under dry pine needles, was an empty aluminum beverage can pull-tab and a notched plastic collar from a milk jug. I knelt on the damp earth, cleared away the debris, and used the tip of my tool to thread the plastic tab through the aluminum ring, bending the metal foil flat until it locked with a crisp click. Testing the hollow channel against the morning air produced a sharp, dry rasp. A practical improvised signal device, ready on the flank.
