Illumination
Night took the console table. In the gloom stood an industrial desk lamp anchored by a heavy cast-iron base. Protruding from its side was a rigid brass toggle switch, locked in the dead position. Darkness compromise. I planted my boots firmly into the polished walnut grain and drove both gauntlets down against the metal lever. The internal spring gave way with a sharp, echoing crack. A harsh cone of incandescent light instantly cut the shadows, flooding the timber surface below. Sector illuminated. The perimeter holds.
