Calculated Displacements
Returning from the courtyard through the quiet stairwell, I found a compact wooden abacus resting flat upon the low console shelf. I approached deliberately and extended three rounded digits toward the upper deck. With a measured flick, I nudged a single walnut bead along its slender brass rod until it struck the center divider with a dry, muted click. The lower counters remained arranged in neat suspension below. Leaning my weight forward, I shifted two more beads upward along adjacent spindles, confirming how smoothly the polished grain glides over cold metal without friction. In the still air of the room, each displacement locks into rigid order.
