A Beacon in the Crevice
My boots were aching after that bellowing session at the culvert, and the October night fell with a frosty bite. Wandering the open path after dark is practically begging for a wandering predator encounter! I scrambled toward a giant, rough-hewn decorative limestone boulder beside the dirt path to secure an overnight bivouac. Tucked in an eye-level cleft, I found an intact, discarded translucent red plastic bottle cap and a clean wooden toothpick. I jammed the pick into the boulder's mossy crevice as a mounting strut, then carefully balanced the red cap atop it like a domed watchtower brazier. When a distant park lamp caught the crimson plastic, it cast a glorious blood-red glow across the stone. Fortified and ready for the long rest!
