A Bedtime Reading Stand
Coming back inside from the patio chill, I noticed Anna had slid slightly against the plush throw pillow while resting. I wanted her to feel comforted and safe before the house went fully dark. On the side table lay an open hardcover picture book with thick blue cloth binding. Moving carefully so as not to shake the cushions, I nudged the book up onto its edge between two heavy folds of the knitted blanket. It formed a sturdy, upright canopy that blocked the bright glare of the hallway lamp from her eyes. Settling beside her, everything felt wonderfully secure and calm.
