A Gentle Dimming

Returning to the parlor as the night settled, I observed the small bedside reading lamp casting an overly insistent glare across the polished mahogany. An evening ought to transition into quiet repose with measured grace, rather than bold illumination. Stepping deliberately across the wood grain, I approached the slender brass pull chain dangling beneath the pleated linen shade. I gathered the cool metal bead firmly between both gloved hands, gave a gentle, downward tug until a soft, satisfying click sounded, and watched the room ease into warm, shadowy comfort. I smoothed my front in quiet contentment.
