Tension and Drop

I reached the heavy steel mail drop box bolted flush into the concrete curb seam. The curved blue casing showed years of clean utility wear along its riveted joints. I stepped onto the raised base flange, reaching up to grip the thick tubular handle of the deposit chute. Strong spring resistance. I pulled downward with measured force. The hinged internal baffle plate swung upward with a dull, heavy clatter, sealing the chute opening against weather and draft. I held the handle taut against the counterweight, checking the pivot clearance before easing the tension off. The door snapped flush with a solid thud.
