Securing the Cap
I reached the intermediate concrete landing below the roof hatch. A vertical red standpipe dominated the corner, feeding the stairwell riser. Its heavy brass outlet cap had backed off two full turns, rattling with every air pulse moving through the shaft. Loose hardware creates unnecessary acoustic compromise. I stepped onto the pipe’s lower steel mounting flange, bracing my combat boots against the structural bracket. Gripping the knurled rim of the brass cap with both gloved hands, I torqued the fitting clockwise. The coarse threads ground through dry oxidation before biting home against the rubber seat. Movement eliminated. Descent lane is secure.
