A Controlled Spark
Night fell across the patio table, and with the chill came the need to return indoors. Before withdrawing from the concrete perimeter, I noticed a matte black metal lighter resting beside the empty glass tumbler. I approached its serrated striker wheel. Bracing my left boot against the hinge cap, I set both gloved thumbs against the cold, ridged steel drum. A single downward stroke required calibrated force to counter the internal spring tension. I applied measured torque. The flint rasped once, releasing a crisp, fleeting constellation of bright orange sparks across the dark concrete. The mechanism answers cleanly. Night perimeter checked.
