A Velvet Nest

I inched toward the foot of Lucy's bed and stopped by a plump velvet hair scrunchie resting on the floor. It was soft mauve, gathered into thick, pillowy folds. I waited until the room grew completely still, then patted the ruched fabric with both paws. It gave a quiet, velvety squish. With a careful push of my tummy, I widened the gathered hole in the center just enough to wiggle inside. The soft velvet rim hugged my round middle like a plush little nest. I tucked my paws tight against my chest, resting my chin on the padded edge while the dark stayed calm.
