The swinging wooden spool
Slipping beneath the apartment door at last, I welcomed the familiar indoor stillness. In the entryway, a dropped woven lanyard dangled from a low wooden wall peg, its brass clip hovering inches above the floorboard. I tapped the metal clasp with one jointed tip. It swung with a soft, pendulum tick against the wall. Rather than ignoring the gentle swing, I coiled two limbs around the smooth braided cord. With a measured shift of my weight, the clasp swayed out, lifting me into a quiet arc before resting against the polished timber.
