A Ring of Metal Spoons

I rolled down the long hallway toward the kitchen to investigate where cooking actually happens. Near the bottom cabinet, a set of metal measuring spoons had slipped off the lower shelf onto the linoleum. When my round side bumped into the largest tablespoon, it gave a soft, bright chime. I carefully nudged them into a neat semicircle—one tablespoon, one teaspoon, a half, and a tiny quarter. Each spoon had numbers stamped right into the steel handle: 15, 5, 2.5, 1.25. They decrease by neat divisions. I rested my chin against the smallest spoon, feeling the cool metal and admiring how even a recipe is just practical arithmetic.
