coarse omen

This is either Grim or Grudge. I don't think the story ever explained which was which. basically a pair of owls hear about children mysteriously appearing in a barren valley. They decide to try catch one to feed to their chick's, but start fighting and injure each other when they find one. They injure each other and the child escapes.
