A Clean Aperture

I emerged from the alcove by the copper riser and ascended the side table leg. Clear morning light fell sharp across an antique brass camera aperture iris resting flat on a leather coaster. Its delicate overlapping steel blades were jammed halfway shut, held rigid by a tiny speck of dried plaster caught in the outer track. Planting my boots firmly on the oak grain, I gripped the knurled brass control ring with both hands and turned it with steady, calculated torque. The debris pulverized cleanly under the steel teeth. With a dry metallic whisper, the twelve curved blades slid smoothly outward, locking open into a perfect circular aperture. The perimeter settles into crisp, quiet focus.
