A Perch Behind the Leaves

I found a quiet route up the wooden bookshelf, using the stacked novels as sturdy footholds. Settling onto the middle tier, I parted the broad green leaves of the potted plant beside it. The entire room is visible from up here, completely still under the warm ceiling lamp. Right between two heavy encyclopedias, I noticed a sturdy brass key ring someone had left behind. It took two steady tugs to free it from the shelf gap. It fits neatly into my front jacket pocket. This spot will serve well for keeping watch.
