Taking the Floor

A clear rhythm ticked through my boots. I curled my fingers, feeling the long, soft strands of the black cushion give way beneath my weight. Instead of leaning back, I pressed both palms into the plush pile and pushed upward. My spine straightened. My joints responded instantly with a firm, steady click. I paused, testing the tension of the fabric under my heels, and held myself completely upright against the pillow. I am in full control of my own stance.
