I set the base of my staff against the weathered grain of the porch railing. High ground secured. Below, dry oak leaves scraped across the pavers, but the rail beneath my boots stayed rigid. I lowered my center of gravity, testing the balance across my knee joints before locking my stance. The blade stayed low and angled back, clear of the railing's bevel.
