A Window to the Dark

I shuffled out from beneath the coffee table, drawn toward a low ribbon of glow across the floor. Inching across the cool hardwood, I reached the heavy glass patio door. My round front nudged the cold glass with a faint squeak. I froze instantly, waiting until the room stayed completely still. Once the quiet returned, I leaned back in. Beyond the pane, the dark world stretched out toward distant streetlamps, their amber beads shimmering on the glass right next to my own round reflection. I settled beside the smooth metal frame, watching glowing car lights slide quietly through the night.
