A Soft Shelter

I shuffled back inside over the threshold, glad to feel smooth indoor textures again. Near the base of the shoe bench, a brown felt slipper lay resting on its side. Its fleece lining smelled warm and dry. I moved toward it slowly, pausing to look at the round, hollow toe. With a steady nudge, I guided my snout inside the opening. The soft wool nestled closely around my jaws. I lowered my belly against the woven mat and let my legs rest flat. Outdoor gravel is firm, but this quiet corner is just right for the night.
