Darkness covered the driveway aggregate, dissolving the visual perimeter along the tar expansion seam. At the tapered tip of the red carpenter's pencil, I located a discarded chrome tire valve cap wedged between two pieces of coarse gravel. Anchoring my boots firmly against the rough asphalt, I gripped the cylindrical metal body with both gloved hands and levered it upright against the pencil's flat beveled edge. The distant amber streetlamp beam struck the polished cylinder at an acute angle, reflecting a razor-thin streak of light directly down the pencil's red wooden spine.
