Cold Metal Descent
Heading back from the convenience store as night settled in, I padded into the quiet kitchen and climbed up onto the cold granite counter. Near the faucet, a thick ceramic mug was resting upside down right over the stainless steel basin rim. I paused in a low crouch, waiting to see if it would teeter on its own. With deliberate force, I rammed my broad shoulder into the glazed ceramic side, sliding it an inch back onto the dry counter until the edge was clear. Satisfied, I dropped over the rim into the deep metallic sink. The freezing steel floor chilled my chest instantly, and when I let loose a low rumble, the wide bowl answered with a rich, metallic echo.
