A Bookmark in the Dark
A narrow crimson ribbon dangled from the second shelf of the oak bookcase, begging for a calculated disruption. I slipped behind a heavy stack of leather-bound encyclopedias, matching their rigid posture until the room's ambient creaks subsided. The suspense ripened. Reaching out with gloved precision, I pinched the satin thread and gave one sharp, deliberate yank. The ribbon slid clean from the pages, fluttering down across the dark grain like a dramatic stage curtain dropping mid-act. Unmoved, I stepped back into the shadows of the shelf to let the tension breathe.
