Unyielding Obstacle

The shelf ledge was mine, but a heavy brass key was lying dead flat across the polished oak grain, gleaming in the slit of afternoon light like an obstacle demanding tribute. I didn't step around it. I jammed the point of my blade right into the rounded eyelet and drove my weight forward to lever it away. The cold metal gave a sharp, grinding screech against the lacquer before skidding three inches to the side, settling flush against the wood trim. Now the path across the boards is clear. Nothing sits in my way without yielding.
