Moisture Check

I walked from the counter to the sunny sill behind the sink. A small terracotta pot sat beside a dried tea tin. The soil surface had cracked into three distinct geometric plates. I leaned forward and pressed the base of my body against the pot rim to inspect the depth of the gap. It measured approximately half a centimeter. A dry brown leaf lay across the rim, quiet and unmoving. I tapped the pot twice with one slender leg. It sounded hollow. The soil requires water soon, but the structure remains firm.
