I pushed back the leather lid of the trunk and carried my brass caliper onto the stone sill to examine an obstruction on the steps. A stiff pigeon feather had blown into the fluted iron neck of an antique carriage horn left by the door, wedging a dry hazelnut shell deep in the reed socket. Kneeling on the Portland flagstone, I braced one gauntlet against the iron casing and calculated the angle of clearance. A faint telekinetic pulse lifted the brittle shell clear of the aperture, allowing the feather to drift free into the morning breeze. When the air draught passed through the hollow tube, it produced a crisp, uninterrupted acoustic tone.
