Mapping the Lower Shelf
I descended from the sill along the heavy weave of the curtain hem, keeping each step measured and firm. On the shelf below rested an unfolded transit map, anchored against curling by a solid steel carabiner. I approached without haste to inspect the mechanism. Leaning my weight against the spring gate, I pressed until it yielded with a muted, satisfying click, then released it to confirm the latch held tight. With the anchor verified, I sat beside the silver arch and traced a raised crease in the paper with my padded fingertip, studying the quiet intersections laid out before me.
