The Golden Ribbon Trap
I hooked the tiny metal lip of a bulky yellow tape measure over the edge of a pine plank and started backing away step by careful step. The stiff yellow ribbon stretched out between us like a miniature suspension bridge, clicking softly with every inch. I squinted down the printed black numbers, treating it like a high-stakes construction runway. But right around mark eighteen, my heel tapped a glass jar of rusty screws, my thumb brushed the lock slider, and *SNAP!* The spring whirred and sucked the entire ribbon back with a sharp metallic clatter. I instantly dropped into a rigid defensive crouch, bracing my knees while the casing sat there, looking completely innocent.
