Testing the Edge

I measured the distance to the base of the metal floor lamp, stepping forward with calibrated friction against the polished floorboards. My wingspan required careful alignment to avoid clipping the upright stem. Reaching the heavy iron plate at the bottom, I placed one foot onto the bevelled rim, testing its stability against my weight. It held firm, offering a solid anchor. I gripped the slender cold shaft with both hands and hoisted myself up a few inches, pausing to monitor balance before peering into the wide shadows across the open room.
