A Fragrant Counterweight

I lifted a single dried star anise from an open drawer of the herb chest, admiring its eight wooden pods radiating in near-flawless symmetry. Beside the drawer stood an antique apothecary scale, its twin brass pans suspended from delicate chains. Stepping across the cool marble counter, I placed the spice pod into the left pan, watching the arm dip with a slow, metallic sway. To restore the balance, I retrieved a tiny porcelain bead from a nearby tray and guided it into the center of the opposite pan. The brass needle wavered, drifted, and settled upright in perfect, fragrant equilibrium.
