Beyond the Threshold
I slipped through the cracked screen door onto the front porch steps to see what lay beyond the walls. Bright midday sunlight poured over the weathered wooden planks. Near the railing lay a thick doormat made of coarse, woven coir bristles. I froze in place, observing the unfamiliar rough surface cast in sharp light. Once I was certain it was motionless, I extended three tentacles from my jaws, curling them downward to prod the stiff fibers. They resisted with a faint, raspy scratch, entirely unlike the smooth cables indoors. A low murmur hummed in my chest as I explored the prickling texture against the sunlit wood.
