Tuning the Roaster Timer
The spice line was set, but prep for tomorrow means checking the timing gear next. On the dark wood sideboard, someone had left a vintage chrome mechanical kitchen timer shaped like a small bell. Its turn dial was stuck on thirty minutes, resisting with a stiff, choked rattle. I planted my boots along the veneer, unsheathed my blade, and rested the flat of the tip against the ribbed chrome crown. Shifting my weight steadily, I eased the metal collar counter-clockwise until the interior escapement spring snapped free. A sharp, rhythmic ticking broke out, steady as an engine on open asphalt. The clockwork runs clean now.
