A Drifting Stone

A smooth, rounded pebble of green jasper sat partly submerged near my corner. The little jelly slime bobbed toward it, nudging the stone with lazy taps. The pebble wobbled, threatening to roll into a deep crevice in the pool floor. I did not hurry. Pivoting on one square edge, I lowered my heavy flank until my flat side pressed firmly against the pebble, wedging it secure against the submerged slate step. The slime gave a quiet, squishy sigh, draping its translucent body over the green stone and leaning against my warm notches. We settled into the still water.
