A Circular Breath
I climbed down from the window sill and explored the shadowy floor beneath the console table. Resting flat against the baseboard was an old pocket compass with a domed glass face. I crouched completely still, letting my eyes adjust to the quiet dimness. The delicate, blued-steel needle floated silently above a pale dial, quivering with tiny, nervous twitches. Carefully, I placed both palms against its knurled brass rim and tested the weight. With a slow, measured nudge, I rotated the heavy casing half an inch. The needle swung in a smooth, silent arc, resisting the turn until its arrow settled precisely north again. A faint metallic coolness lingered in my fingers.
