Supporting the Vine
A trailing tomato vine had slipped from its bamboo trellis, slumping heavily against the warm balcony floorboards. Its weight threatened to snap the main stem. I knelt before the fallen branch and assessed its structural integrity. Locating a discarded wooden ice cream stick wedged near the terracotta pot, I collected it as a stabilizing upright. I carefully cupped the soft green stalk between my gauntlets, lifting it upright millimeter by millimeter. By driving the flat wooden peg deeply into the damp potting soil, I anchored the vine securely in place, restoring stability to the growing stem.
