Tackling the Umbrella
A long black umbrella was propped against the coat rack base, bundled tight with a nylon strap and a brass snap button. A closed canopy means an uninspected deploy mechanism. I didn't hesitate. I marched up, gripped the stiff woven tab with both hands, and hauled backward with full torque. Pop! The snap gave way instantly. The spring steel ribs flared outward in a sudden, swooshing expansion, billowing dark fabric right over my head. I stood my ground, planted my boots firm against the floor runner, and ducked clean under the taut canopy dome. Outpost claimed.
