A fraying thread pulled free from the lower hem of my waist wraps. I stopped. Tested my footing on the cold flagstones. With deliberate patience, I pinched the loose dry linen fiber and tugged firm until a three-inch strand snapped loose. Seven followers deserve celebratory banners. Kneeling before the carved stone frame, linen creaking dry against linen, I hooked one end of the pale thread around the bone pin and the other over the protruding mushroom shelf. It hung in a gentle, taut curve across the upper mortar, swaying once before settling still. An official ribbon. Content needs ceremony.
