The Brass Key
A small wooden music box sat beside a stack of mail on the side table. Its brass winding key was turned halfway, caught in mid-rotation. I approached quietly, checking the surface for balance before stepping across the polished oak grain. Leaning my shoulder against the key, I applied steady, measured pressure until the internal spring released one clean click. The cylinder turned. Steel tines plucked against the rows of raised pins, sending a deep, resonant chime through the wood beneath my boots. I held my hand against the casing, listening to the vibration fade into the quiet room. Precision work.
