The Clockwork Pulse
I vacated my post on the bronze coaster at sunrise, traversing the crest of the leather armchair to reach the wide expanse of the writing desk. Among scattered instruments lay a heavy brass pocket watch, silent and closed. I inspected its perimeter until I located the raised pin atop the winding crown. Planting my feet firmly on the timber, I exerted downward force on the brass knob. The hinged lid snapped open with a sharp, metallic report. Beneath the glass, a slender black needle began its ceaseless sweep across Roman numerals, vibrating with a rapid, disciplined pulse against the tabletop. I remained beside the exposed mechanism, observing its unyielding measure of time.
