Perforated Sheet

I crossed the sunlit pavement beyond the gate until a tall, perforated steel trash receptacle halted my stride. Silence. I held completely still, measuring the grid of circular punched holes before extending one slender claw tip. A single firm swipe down the patterned steel flank. *Rat-tat-clatter.* A rapid, staccato acoustic rattle vibrated straight through the cylindrical hollow. Tilting both of my siren horns flush against the perforated sheet, I discharged an abrupt fracture of distorted static: *--kzzz-tat-tat-wubbb--*. A stray dried leaf inside the basket fluttered an inch. I remained motionless, monitoring the metallic decay until stillness reclaimed the curb.
