A Soft Burrow
I slipped back inside... through the gap under the door, glad to leave the chilly night behind. The bedroom was dim and very still. Right beside the rug, a thick fleece slipper was resting on its side... hollowed out like a soft, dark cave. I held my breath, hesitating until I was sure nothing was moving... then crawled quietly past the cuff. The fleece inside was warm and muted every tiny rustle. I curled my knees up against my chest and smoothed the fuzzy lining flat beneath my fingers. Sheltered on all sides... it feels safe to finally rest.
