Braking the Spool

Dusk crept across the cabinet shelf, so I scouted around for a solid spot to anchor before dark. Tucked behind the pine block, I found a heavy roll of gray duct tape lying flat, with its loose end peeled back and stuck like glue to the wood grain. I grabbed the frayed flap with both hands, planted my boots against the thick cardboard core, and heaved. Skrrrrrr-thwip! The gummy adhesive let go with a dry, ripping shriek, spraying tiny threads of woven fabric into the air. I yanked three inches free, folded the tacky strip straight over the shelf lip, and stomped it down flat with both boot heels. Stuck fast, tough as iron. Nothing is budging tonight.
